Boarding Schools
There are many different types of private boarding schools. When a person thinks of
boarding school they often times immediately think of places where children with behavior
problems are sent, but that is not the case. There are specialty
therapeutic boarding schools set up for troubled
children, but there are also teen boarding schools that are aimed towards different types of
teens. College preparatory boarding high schools are aimed at preparing teenagers for
college. These institutions often work best for teens who excel in school. The classes and
curriculum at these places are often more advanced then that at a high school.
Some college preparatory boarding high school are now also focusing on teenagers with
learning disabilities and are focused more at helping them learn how to cope with their
learning disability while attending college. Military schools also are a type of college
preparatory school. However, in a military boarding school students are met with military
type rules and structure. These places are very demanding and are often a good option for
parents who feel their child has not been excelling in school due to lack of discipline.
Pre-professional boarding schools are education institutions where the students learn skills
and trades. Most of the time these institutions focus on careers in the arts like dance, music
and writing. The idea of these schools is to focus on preparing the student’s art so that
they can then go on to a college. Religious or Christian boarding schools can also be
college preparatory institutes. The curriculum is all taught with a religious background.
Catholic schools will often have nuns as teachers, where as Christian boarding schools
usually just have teachers. It really depends on the actual religion of the school as to how
the institute works. Troubled teen boarding schools focus on teens who have been getting
into trouble, either with the law or at school. The focus of these institutions is to offer
the teenagers help with their problems while continuing their education. These schools can
be very strict with ridged rules, almost like a detention center or they can be more laid
back just as any other boarding school.
There are also all girls or all boys boarding schools. These schools can be any type listed
above. The idea of separating boys from girls can often be a good choice. These types of
environments are often chosen because they do offer some benefits. Some parents believe that
teens become less focused on appearance and are able to better focus on school work when not
interacting with the opposite sex during class time. In addition to all the types of
institutions mentioned above a school can also be funded differently. Regardless of the type
of institute, there are public and private boarding schools. Religious schools tend to
almost always be private ones. The main differences parents will see between a private and
publicly funded school is the cost of tuition and financial aid. Tuition at private schools
is often higher, but they also offer a variety of financial aid only available to the
students at the school which means it is easy to get. Publicly funded schools, however,
usually offer lower tuition and have the benefit of using government funding for financial
aid, along with private aid options. There are many different types of teen boarding
schools. A parent interested in sending their child to a top boarding school should be able to
easily find one that suits both their and their child’s needs.
