Military Boarding Schools
Most schools with exclusive boarding facilities aim to develop
successful, well-rounded young adults and military boarding schools are
no different. However, these schools differ from typical boarding
schools in the fact that they are equipped to develop students who
believe that they would like to join the armed forces. For this purpose,
most living quarters are barrack-like, and, discipline and physical
development are given greater importance than a regular boarding
institution. The criteria and eligibility for attending schools with a military
focus are stringent. These schools requiring students to come with a
record of good grades, recommendations and personal interviews are also
generally needed before the school will make their selection and offer
your child a place.
Military schools of this type are commonly known to be institutions
that develop the world's next generation of young leaders - adults who
possess a great amount of responsibility, confidence, self-respect and
respect for others. Much of these values are instilled through tasks
like cleaning duties on the school grounds and punishments for failing
to adhere to rules and instructions, for example. The experience of
studying away from home in itself matures a student and helps develop
qualities like self-motivation and discipline because in a boarding
school, students don't have their parents reminding them to study.
Military boarding schools typically take in students when they are
about 12 years old and graduate students at 18. With strict academic
programs in place, these school place high importance on education
standards. However they also look to develop all-rounded individuals,
and physical activities like sports and team building characteristics
are consciously encouraged. In addition to physical activities, social
education and topics outside of the academic are offered to students.
These can include things like performing arts, first aid, film
appreciation, scuba diving, golf, just to name a few. Some schools also
encourage the spiritual development of their students.
Boarding in a school away from home takes a fair amount of adjustment
on the part of your child as well as your entire family. It is important
therefore to select a school that both you and your child or children
feel most comfortable with. Once you've narrowed down your selection of
appropriate military boarding schools, take a personal visit of
that school to meet with the headmaster, teachers, students and to get a
general feel of the environment your child might be studying and living
in.
